Social media…love it or hate it, it’s an essential part of how we communicate these days. While most people think of it as something you do in your free time, it actually can be very useful in business.
What’s the first thing you do when thinking of hiring a new company? You check out their business online. What’s the first thing employers do when considering a candidate? They check out your social media profiles. I know I’ve “cyber-stalked” people when I’m trying to find out more about them before a meeting…
That’s why maintaining your image on social media platforms is so important.
When I teach classes on marketing and branding, one of the things I talk about is how to maintain a consistent image. When it comes to promoting yourself on social media, the first step is to make sure your profiles are the best they can be. Here are a few easy tips:
Make sure your profiles are completely filled out.
This seems pretty simple, but you’d be surprised how many profiles don’t have even the basic information filled in. If you’re using your social media channels for business, make sure they reference your website and have all the information clients (or future employers) need to contact you.
Be consistent with your profile images.
Consistency across platforms is one of the keys to establishing your brand. At the very least, your profile images should be the same, or very similar, so your audience knows they’re in the right place.
Audit your profiles regularly
A friend once told me she was looking to hire someone—the person checked all the boxes on paper and in the interviews, but when my friend went to check on social media…well let’s just say the candidate didn’t get the job. Always be cautious with what you’re putting out into the world, you never know who will be looking.
