Often people will inquire about getting a headshot, but after chatting with them a bit, I realize they’ll more likely need personal brand images. The question I often hear is: “What’s the difference?”
When I say the word “headshot,” what comes to mind?
The idea of a professional headshot is ingrained in our corporate mindset. Our minds immediately go to the traditional head and shoulders, formal business portrait we’ve seen 100 times.
Traditional headshots are great, and for many companies just using them for websites and in proposals, they work just fine. But if you’re a small business or an entrepreneur, I often recommend something more.
That’s where the modern headshot comes in. Contemporary headshots are designed to show style and personality. They may be a little more than the typical head and shoulders shot, and include dynamic posing and lighting. They’re designed to be fun sessions that show you in a little less formal way.
But when you’re building you brand, I recommend you take it one step further. Enter personal brand images…portraits designed to show a variety of looks and give people more insight into who you are.
If you’re a small business or an entrepreneur, particularly in service-based businesses, you’re often the face of your brand. Showing your personality to build trust with potential clients becomes a very important component in acquiring work.
Personal brand sessions include multiple looks, with different outfits and backgrounds. They may even include style elements, such as signature accessories that reflect your unique look. Sometimes they include props – like a musician with an instrument or a doctor with a lab coat and stethoscope.
With personal brand sessions, the goal isn’t one standard image. It’s to create a variety of images that can be used in different ways so you’re not using the same headshot over and over again. It’s a great way to keep your audience engaged and wanting more.
