Don’t like having photos taken? You’re not alone! Many people feel uncomfortable or self-conscious in front of the camera.
(Anyone else having flashbacks to school picture days? Oh, the horror!)
Headshots are so necessary in today’s business world. Many consider a professional headshot as the baseline for being taken seriously in business. So how do you get over the fear of having your photo taken? Here are some tips:
Find a photographer you trust
Look for a photographer who specializes in headshots and has experience working with clients who may feel camera-shy. Remember, it’s the photographer’s job to put you at ease in front of the camera, not yours! A professional headshot photographer knows the poses and lighting techniques that will make you look your best – and will provide tips and coaching along the way.
Bonus tip: We work really well with people who hate having photos taken. Many clients appreciate that we try to make it a fun, lighthearted experience.
Communicate your concerns
Have some pesky age lines that drive you crazy? Does one eye photograph larger than the other? Are you self-conscious about one feature in particular? Share your concerns with your photographer!
A trained professional photographer understands that we all have things about ourselves we’re insecure about. It’s the photographer’s job to make sure those things don’t stand out in the photographs. If we know about them ahead of time, we can find ways to make sure they don’t bother you in the final photograph.
Prepare beforehand
Take the time to prepare yourself mentally and physically for the shoot. Get a good night's sleep, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol or excessive caffeine. Wear sunscreen on your face to avoid sunglass tan lines. Preparing for your session a week or so prior will help ease the tension on session day.
Bonus tip: It’s summer in Florida… sometimes tan lines can’t be avoided. No worries! Many things can be solved with the power of retouching – and extra benefit included with individual headshot sessions.
Choose clothing wisely
What you wear can go a long way in building confidence for your photo session. Wear clothes that make you feel confident and represent the image you want to convey. Make sure clothing fits properly. Stick to solid colors and avoid busy patterns that can distract from your face. Dress in a style that suits your industry or the purpose of the headshot.
Bonus tip: At Karen K Photo, we provide tips and consultation before your session to help you choose outfits that you’ll look best in. We’re happy to help you prepare for your session.
When in doubt… retouching
Look, you can’t control everything! Blemishes can be removed. Flyaway hairs can be fixed. Lines can be minimized. (Most people appreciate a couple of years being taken off!) We’re not talking phone filters here… we use professional retouching techniques that enhance your natural look.
Remember, everyone has their own insecurities, and professional photographers understand that. By following these tips and working with a supportive photographer like Karen K Photo, you can minimize your discomfort and get headshots that you actually like!
